Betel (Piper betle), commonly known as betel leaf, has been traditionally used in several Asian cultures for oral health, including the management of gum diseases like gingivitis. In Ayurveda and traditional folk medicine, betel leaves are valued for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Common practices include chewing betel leaves alone or with areca nut and other ingredients, with the belief that it freshens breath and helps maintain oral hygiene. Some ethnobotanical surveys cite its use specifically for relieving inflamed gums and oral sores.

Scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited but growing. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts of betel leaves exhibit antibacterial activity against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are implicated in the development of plaque and gingivitis. Additionally, a few small-scale clinical studies and animal models suggest that betel leaf extracts may reduce gum inflammation and improve certain oral health parameters. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence is not sufficient to recommend betel as a primary treatment for gingivitis.

It’s also important to note that traditional betel chewing, especially when combined with areca nut and tobacco, is associated with significant oral health risks, including oral cancer. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis and some preliminary scientific support for the use of betel leaf in managing gingivitis, more rigorous research is needed, and caution should be exercised.
