Evidence supporting the use of: Bioflavonoid
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are polyphenolic compounds found in many fruits and vegetables. Their use in supporting or treating gingivitis is primarily based on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Several small-scale clinical studies and laboratory investigations have explored their efficacy in oral health, including gingivitis. For example, hesperidin, quercetin, and rutin—types of bioflavonoids—have demonstrated benefits in reducing gum inflammation and oxidative stress in in vitro and animal models. Some human trials have shown that bioflavonoid-containing gels or mouthwashes can reduce gingival bleeding and plaque accumulation, but these studies are generally limited in size and methodological quality.
Currently, there is modest scientific validation for the adjunctive use of bioflavonoids in gingivitis management. The evidence is not robust enough to recommend bioflavonoids as a first-line therapy; rather, they are sometimes used as a supplement to standard care (such as professional cleaning and good oral hygiene). Major dental guidelines do not list bioflavonoids as a standard treatment for gingivitis. More comprehensive, high-quality clinical trials are needed to establish efficacy and safety. In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting their use, it is limited and not definitive.
