Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are plant-derived compounds commonly found in fruits and vegetables. Their use in supporting oral health, including gingivitis, is rooted primarily in traditional and historical practices rather than robust scientific validation. Bioflavonoids have been historically valued for their purported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are believed to help maintain healthy capillaries and reduce inflammation. Traditional herbal medicine has recommended bioflavonoid-containing foods and extracts to support gum health and reduce bleeding or swelling associated with gingivitis.
Some early studies and in vitro data suggest that bioflavonoids may inhibit the growth of certain oral bacteria and reduce inflammation, which could theoretically benefit gingival health. However, clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness in treating or preventing gingivitis in humans remains limited and inconsistent. Most available studies are either small, lack rigorous methodology, or use bioflavonoids in combination with other compounds, making it difficult to assess their independent effect. Thus, while the traditional use of bioflavonoids for gingivitis persists, and some preliminary research is promising, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to fully endorse their efficacy for this specific condition.
