Cajeput oil, derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca cajuputi tree, has a long history of traditional use in folk medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia. It has been used for its antiseptic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties in various topical and inhaled formulations. In the context of oral health, especially gingivitis, cajeput oil has been included in traditional remedies and some herbal toothpastes and mouth rinses, owing to its believed ability to reduce inflammation and combat infection-causing bacteria.

However, while in vitro studies indicate that cajeput oil possesses antimicrobial activity against some oral pathogens, there is a lack of high-quality clinical evidence demonstrating its efficacy in treating or supporting gingivitis specifically. No large-scale randomized controlled trials have evaluated its direct effect on gingival inflammation or bleeding. Most available support comes from anecdotal or traditional uses, not from robust scientific validation. Therefore, the use of cajeput oil for gingivitis is primarily justified by traditional practice, with some preliminary laboratory findings but insufficient clinical evidence to strongly recommend it.
