Evidence supporting the use of: Centella asiatica
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centella asiatica has some preliminary scientific evidence supporting its use in oral health, including for gingivitis, though the evidence base is not robust. Traditionally, Centella asiatica (also known as gotu kola) has been used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems primarily for wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Modern research has explored these properties in various contexts, including oral health. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Centella asiatica exhibit antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens associated with gingivitis, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Additionally, the plant's active compounds, such as asiaticoside and madecassoside, have shown anti-inflammatory properties that could theoretically reduce gum inflammation.
There are also a handful of small clinical studies and pilot trials that have examined herbal mouthwashes containing Centella asiatica. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2016 found that a herbal mouthrinse containing Centella asiatica, along with other herbs, reduced plaque and gingival inflammation comparably to chlorhexidine in the short term. However, these studies often use multi-herb formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effect of Centella asiatica alone. Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence, the quality and quantity of studies are insufficient to strongly support its use for gingivitis at this time.
