Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ellagic acid is a natural polyphenolic compound found in various fruits and vegetables, such as pomegranates, strawberries, and walnuts. Its use in supporting or treating gingivitis is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that ellagic acid possesses notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These characteristics suggest potential benefits in reducing the inflammation and microbial burden associated with gingivitis.

Some small-scale clinical studies and experimental models have indicated that ellagic acid or ellagic acid-rich extracts (such as from pomegranate) can reduce markers of gum inflammation, inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens, and decrease oxidative stress in oral tissues. For instance, mouthwashes containing pomegranate extract (rich in ellagic acid) have been shown to reduce gingival bleeding and plaque indices in some human studies. However, the evidence remains limited, with a lack of large, well-controlled clinical trials directly evaluating pure ellagic acid for gingivitis in humans.

Therefore, while early research is promising and supports a potential role for ellagic acid in oral health and gingivitis management, the current level of evidence is modest. More high-quality human studies are required before its use can be fully endorsed for this purpose.
