Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin found in green tea, has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing gingivitis. Recent scientific studies suggest that EGCG exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which are relevant in the context of gingivitis—a common inflammatory condition of the gums caused by bacterial biofilms. Several in vitro and clinical studies have demonstrated that EGCG can inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and reduce the formation of dental plaque. Moreover, EGCG has been shown to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases in gingival tissues, which may help mitigate gum inflammation and tissue destruction.

Randomized controlled trials and pilot studies have assessed the efficacy of green tea catechin-containing oral rinses or gels as adjuncts to standard oral hygiene. Results indicate modest reductions in gingival bleeding, plaque index, and inflammatory markers compared to placebo. However, most studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in formulations, so the overall quality of evidence is moderate. While there is no long-standing traditional use of EGCG specifically for gingivitis, current scientific evidence supports its adjunctive role in gingival health. As such, EGCG is increasingly included in oral care products targeting gingivitis, although it should not replace conventional treatments such as mechanical plaque removal and professional dental care.
