Euphorbia, a large genus of plants known commonly as spurges, has a long history of traditional medicinal use in various cultures, particularly in Asia and Africa. For oral health, including conditions like gingivitis, certain Euphorbia species have been used in folk remedies. The traditional use is primarily based on the belief that Euphorbia's latex or extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could, in theory, help with gum inflammation and infection characteristic of gingivitis. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy and safety of Euphorbia for gingivitis are extremely limited or absent. Most evidence remains anecdotal or is extrapolated from in vitro studies showing some antibacterial activity against oral pathogens. Furthermore, Euphorbia latex is known to be highly irritant and even toxic, raising concerns about its safety for oral use. While some traditional practices persist, there is no robust clinical evidence or standardized preparation supporting its use for gingivitis in modern dentistry. As such, its use is justified mostly by tradition rather than scientific validation.
