Ferula assafoetida, commonly known as asafoetida, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, it has been employed as a remedy for various oral health issues, including gingivitis, by preparing mouth rinses or topical pastes. The rationale is based on its strong antimicrobial constituents (such as ferulic acid and volatile oils) which are believed to combat oral pathogens and reduce inflammation.

However, while in vitro studies have shown that asafoetida possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity, there is limited direct scientific research specifically investigating its effects on gingivitis in humans. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or involves general antimicrobial assays rather than clinical trials focused on oral health or gingival inflammation. Thus, while traditional use is well documented, and there is a plausible biological mechanism, robust clinical evidence is lacking. Therefore, the use of Ferula assafoetida for gingivitis remains primarily supported by tradition, with only preliminary scientific support that does not yet meet the standards of rigorous evidence-based medicine.
