Evidence supporting the use of: Flavonoid
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Flavonoids, a diverse group of plant polyphenols, have been investigated for their potential role in the management of gingivitis due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Scientific studies, including in vitro, animal, and some small-scale human clinical trials, have shown that flavonoids—such as quercetin, rutin, and catechins—can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens, reduce inflammatory cytokine production, and decrease oxidative stress in the gingival tissues. For instance, green tea catechins (especially epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG) have demonstrated efficacy in reducing plaque formation and gingival inflammation when used as mouth rinses or chewing gum ingredients.
However, while these mechanisms are promising and some clinical studies have reported improvements in gingival health with flavonoid supplementation or topical application, the overall quality of clinical evidence remains moderate. Most studies have been small, short in duration, or lacked rigorous controls. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest potential benefit, but emphasize the need for larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosages and formulations. Thus, while flavonoids are scientifically plausible adjuncts for gingivitis support and have shown positive effects in early research, current evidence supports their use as a complementary, rather than primary, intervention.
