Gallic acid is a polyphenolic compound found in various plants, fruits, and teas, and has been studied for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Scientific interest in its application for oral health, particularly gingivitis, has arisen from these properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that gallic acid can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, both of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of gingivitis. Additionally, gallic acid has been shown to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers in cell culture models relevant to periodontal disease.

Despite these promising laboratory findings, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence supporting the use of gallic acid specifically for the treatment or adjunctive management of gingivitis. Most studies to date have been conducted in vitro or in animal models, with very limited human trials. As such, while the mechanistic rationale exists and early results are encouraging, the evidence base is not strong enough to recommend gallic acid as a proven therapy for gingivitis in clinical practice. More well-designed human studies are needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
