Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is used as a supportive treatment for gingivitis, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Scientific studies, though limited in size and scope, indicate that chamomile extracts (in the form of mouthwashes or gels) may help reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding. Research published in peer-reviewed dental journals has shown that chamomile mouthrinses can decrease plaque accumulation and improve gingival health when compared to placebo, although they are generally less effective than chlorhexidine, the standard medicinal mouthwash. The mechanisms proposed include chamomile’s content of flavonoids, such as apigenin, which modulate inflammatory pathways and may inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis.

However, the quality of evidence is moderate at best, with most studies being small, short-term, or lacking in rigorous methodology. Systematic reviews acknowledge potential benefits but also emphasize the need for larger, well-designed clinical trials to confirm efficacy and safety. Traditional use of chamomile in oral health, including as a rinse or poultice, has been documented in European herbal medicine, but scientific validation is the basis for its current use in gingivitis support. Thus, while there is some scientific support for German chamomile in gingivitis management, it should be considered an adjunct rather than a replacement for standard dental care.
