Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) has a longstanding history in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for treating inflammatory conditions, including those affecting the mouth. In recent years, scientific studies have investigated its efficacy in managing gingivitis, a common gum disease characterized by inflammation and bleeding of the gums. The active constituents in Boswellia serrata, particularly boswellic acids, are known for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Several clinical trials and in vitro studies have explored the use of Boswellia extracts in oral health. A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy (2006) found that a mouthwash containing Boswellia significantly reduced plaque and gingival inflammation compared to a placebo. Other studies have demonstrated that Boswellia extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in gum tissues.

Although the number of high-quality clinical trials is limited, the available evidence suggests that Boswellia serrata may be a useful adjunct in the management of gingivitis. Its mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of the inflammatory response and suppression of harmful oral bacteria. However, more robust, large-scale studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for routine use in dental care. Currently, Boswellia is included in some herbal oral care products targeting gum health, reflecting both traditional use and emerging scientific support.
