Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) has received scientific investigation for its potential benefits in oral health, including the management of gingivitis. Several clinical trials and in vitro studies have evaluated its effects on gingival inflammation, plaque accumulation, and pathogenic oral bacteria.

Evidence suggests that L. plantarum may exert beneficial effects through multiple mechanisms: production of antimicrobial substances (such as bacteriocins and hydrogen peroxide), competition with pathogenic bacteria (like Porphyromonas gingivalis), and modulation of inflammatory responses in the gingival tissues. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that lozenges or probiotic tablets containing L. plantarum can reduce clinical signs of gingivitis, such as bleeding on probing and gingival index scores, compared to placebo. One notable study published in 2021 demonstrated that daily use of L. plantarum probiotics for 4 weeks led to significant reductions in gingival inflammation and improved oral microbiota profiles.

However, while promising, the total body of evidence is still limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and heterogeneity in probiotic strains and administration methods. Thus, while there is scientific validation supporting the use of L. plantarum for gingivitis, the evidence is moderate (rated 3/5). Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and establish standardized treatment protocols. Nonetheless, current data support its adjunctive use as part of oral hygiene regimens for gingivitis management.
