Evidence supporting the use of: Macaranga indica
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Macaranga indica has a background in traditional medicine, particularly within Ayurvedic and folk practices in India. Various parts of the plant—including leaves and bark—have historically been used for their purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In the context of oral health, traditional practitioners have recommended formulations containing Macaranga indica for treating ailments such as gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and sore gums. The rationale for its use is based on its astringent and anti-inflammatory qualities, which are believed to help soothe inflamed gum tissues and reduce microbial load in the oral cavity. However, while some ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine texts document such uses, the evidence remains largely anecdotal and lacks the support of rigorous scientific validation.
A small number of in vitro studies have investigated the antimicrobial activity of Macaranga indica extracts, indicating potential activity against certain oral pathogens. However, these studies are limited in number and scope, and there are no robust clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy in treating gingivitis in humans. Therefore, the use of Macaranga indica for gingivitis is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with scientific evidence remaining preliminary and insufficient to fully endorse its clinical use.
