Evidence supporting the use of: Mangostin
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mangostin, a xanthone compound primarily derived from the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana), has shown some promise in supporting or treating gingivitis due to its reported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro and some limited clinical studies have investigated its effects on oral pathogens and gingival inflammation. For example, research published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research (2017) and Journal of Oral Science (2011) reported that mouthwashes or gels containing mangosteen extract could reduce gingival bleeding and plaque scores compared to placebo, likely due to inhibition of bacterial growth and modulation of inflammatory pathways. However, these studies are generally small, short in duration, and sometimes lack rigorous controls or blinding.
Traditional use of mangostin or mangosteen for oral health is not well-documented; its application for gingivitis is a relatively recent development rooted in its phytochemical profile rather than ethnomedicinal history. As such, while preliminary scientific evidence suggests potential benefits, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited, and more robust, larger-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and long-term safety. Thus, the use of mangostin for gingivitis is supported by emerging scientific evidence, but cannot be considered a well-established or strongly validated therapy at this time.
