The justification for its use is primarily scientific, as several clinical studies and systematic reviews have evaluated its efficacy in oral health. Tea tree oil possesses notable antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are key factors in combating the bacterial biofilm and inflammation associated with gingivitis.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that mouthwashes containing tea tree oil can reduce gingival bleeding and inflammation, though they may be less effective than chlorhexidine in reducing dental plaque. For example, a 2004 study published in the Australian Dental Journal found that tea tree oil gel significantly reduced gingival index scores compared to placebo, though plaque scores did not change substantially. A 2015 systematic review in the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry concluded that tea tree oil could serve as an adjunct to conventional oral hygiene, especially for its anti-inflammatory effects.

While the evidence is promising, it is not as robust or extensive as that for standard treatments like chlorhexidine, and tea tree oil can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals.
