Evidence supporting the use of: Olive Oil
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Olive oil has been traditionally used as a home remedy for oral health, particularly in the practice known as "oil pulling," which originates from Ayurvedic medicine. Oil pulling involves swishing oil (sometimes olive oil, but more commonly sesame or coconut oil) in the mouth for several minutes before spitting it out. The traditional belief is that this practice helps "pull" toxins from the mouth and improves oral hygiene. While there are some small studies and anecdotal reports suggesting that oil pulling can reduce plaque and gingivitis, most of the available research is of low quality, with small sample sizes and methodological limitations. Specifically, olive oil is less studied than coconut or sesame oil for this purpose. Systematic reviews and dental organizations generally state that while oil pulling may have some benefit as an adjunct to regular oral hygiene, it is not a substitute for brushing and flossing and should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for gingivitis. There is insufficient high-quality scientific evidence directly supporting olive oil's efficacy in treating or preventing gingivitis. Most of its use is justified by tradition and anecdote rather than robust scientific validation.
