Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Notoginseng
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Panax Notoginseng (also known as Sanqi or Tianqi) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, primarily for its hemostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. In recent years, scientific research has investigated its potential role in supporting oral health, including gingivitis. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Panax Notoginseng can inhibit inflammatory cytokine production, decrease oxidative stress, and reduce the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis. Some studies indicate that saponins, particularly notoginsenosides, contribute to these anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
There is emerging clinical evidence: a few small, randomized controlled trials and pilot studies in humans have shown that mouthwashes or gels containing Panax Notoginseng extract can reduce gingival bleeding, plaque index, and inflammation compared to placebo. However, these studies are limited in number, often conducted in China, and sometimes lack rigorous controls or large sample sizes. Thus, while the scientific rationale is plausible and there is some preliminary clinical support, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate. Panax Notoginseng’s use for gingivitis is not solely based on tradition but is supported by early-stage scientific validation; further large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this specific application.
