Evidence supporting the use of: Red Sage
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for various inflammatory conditions, including oral diseases. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential in treating gingivitis due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that extracts of Red Sage can inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and reduce inflammatory cytokine production in gingival tissues. For example, a 2018 laboratory study showed that Red Sage extract suppressed inflammatory mediators like TNF-α and IL-6 in human gingival fibroblasts. Additionally, clinical studies—though limited in size and number—have suggested that mouthwashes or gels containing Red Sage extract may help reduce gingival bleeding and plaque scores when used as an adjunct to conventional oral hygiene.
While these findings are promising, high-quality randomized controlled trials are still limited, so the evidence does not yet reach the highest level of clinical recommendation. Still, the current body of scientific research supports some efficacy of Red Sage in managing gingivitis, justifying its use beyond traditional claims.
