Tamaricaceae, the tamarisk family, includes species such as Tamarix aphylla and Tamarix gallica. The use of Tamaricaceae plants for oral and dental conditions, including gingivitis, is primarily rooted in traditional medicine rather than supported by robust scientific studies. Ethnobotanical surveys from regions in North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia report that extracts or decoctions from Tamarix species have been used as mouthwashes or applied to gums to alleviate inflammation and treat mouth ulcers or gum diseases. The rationale for their use is based on their local reputation for having astringent and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically mitigate the symptoms of gingivitis. However, scientific studies directly examining the efficacy or mechanism of Tamaricaceae extracts in treating gingivitis are sparse or non-existent. There are some general studies suggesting that certain Tamarix extracts possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, but these are not specifically targeted at oral pathogens or clinical gingivitis.
