Evidence supporting the use of: Terpenoid (unspecified)
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Terpenoids, a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes, have been studied for their potential effects on oral health, including gingivitis. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that certain terpenoids possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, which are relevant to the pathogenesis of gingivitis—a condition characterized by inflammation of the gums, often due to bacterial biofilm.
For example, terpenoids such as thymol (from thyme oil), carvacrol (from oregano oil), and eugenol (from clove oil) have demonstrated inhibitory effects on oral pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans in laboratory settings. Some mouthwashes and dental care products leverage terpenoid-containing extracts (e.g., thymol in Listerine) and have shown efficacy in reducing plaque and gingival inflammation in clinical trials.
However, "terpenoid (unspecified)" is a vague descriptor; the efficacy and safety may vary significantly between different terpenoids. While there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of certain, well-characterized terpenoids in managing gingivitis, the evidence is not robust for all terpenoids as a group, nor for unspecified terpenoids. Clinical guidelines generally do not specifically recommend terpenoids as a class, but select compounds with known antimicrobial activity may be beneficial as adjuncts to mechanical plaque control.
