Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, particularly those related to colds, flu, and general immune support. In folk medicine, elderberry preparations—such as syrups, teas, and tinctures—have been used to "purify the blood," "support the immune system," and "reduce inflammation," which sometimes extends to addressing swollen lymph glands (lymphadenopathy), especially when associated with infections. However, there is limited direct historical documentation specifically linking elderberry with the treatment of swollen glands; instead, its use is often associated with alleviating symptoms of viral infections that might incidentally result in lymph node swelling. From a scientific perspective, there is currently insufficient evidence to support elderberry as a direct treatment for swollen lymph glands.
