Evidence supporting the use of: Isatis
For the health condition: Glands (swollen lymph)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Isatis, particularly Isatis tinctoria (woad) and Isatis indigotica, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for addressing conditions related to "heat" and "toxicity," which often includes symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph glands. In TCM, Isatis root (Ban Lan Gen) and leaf (Da Qing Ye) are considered to have cooling and detoxifying properties and are commonly used in formulas for treating inflammatory or infectious conditions, including those with swollen lymph nodes (glands). The rationale is based on traditional theories of clearing heat and resolving toxicity, which may manifest as lymphadenopathy in clinical terms.
From a modern scientific perspective, there is limited direct evidence supporting Isatis for the treatment of swollen lymph glands specifically. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that Isatis extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, and there is some limited clinical research suggesting benefit in upper respiratory tract infections. However, these studies do not directly correlate with the specific symptom of swollen lymph nodes, nor do they provide robust clinical trial data for this indication. Therefore, the use of Isatis for swollen glands is primarily justified by traditional use rather than scientific evidence.
