Evidence supporting the use of: Kachnar
For the health condition: Glands (swollen lymph)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the management of glandular swellings, particularly those involving the lymph nodes (often referred to as "gandamala" in Ayurveda). Historical texts describe Kachnar as having properties that help "resolve swellings" and "reduce abnormal growths," making it a go-to remedy for conditions like scrofula, goiter, and other lymphatic enlargements. The bark, flowers, and pods are the most commonly utilized parts. The traditional rationale is based on Kachnar's reputed abilities to promote detoxification, improve lymphatic drainage, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. While some preliminary laboratory studies suggest that extracts of Bauhinia variegata may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for swollen glands or lymphadenopathy is lacking. Most available research is either in vitro or animal-based, focusing on general anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects rather than specifically on human lymphatic disorders. Therefore, the use of Kachnar for swollen lymph glands is justified largely by tradition, with only low-level evidence from modern scientific studies.
