Platycodon grandiflorus, commonly known as balloon flower, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. In these systems, the root (known as Jie Geng in Chinese medicine) has been used to address respiratory conditions, sore throat, cough, and to "open up" the lungs. It is also sometimes employed to help reduce swelling and promote the drainage of pus, which has led to its occasional use for swollen lymph glands (lymphadenopathy), particularly when associated with upper respiratory tract infections. The traditional rationale is based on the herb's reputed ability to "disperse" congestion and clear "phlegm-heat" from the body.

However, while some modern pharmacological studies have examined the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of Platycodon, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically supporting its effectiveness for swollen lymph glands. Most of the scientific research has focused on its effects on respiratory symptoms, inflammation, and as an expectorant. Thus, its use for swollen glands is primarily based on traditional practice rather than robust clinical validation.
