Evidence supporting the use of: Punarnava
For the health condition: Glands (swollen lymph)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) is widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional Indian medicine for a variety of conditions, including those related to glandular health such as swollen lymph glands. In traditional systems, punarnava is considered to have anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and detoxifying properties. It is used in formulations to reduce edema (swelling) and is thought to "cleanse" the lymphatic and circulatory systems. Ancient Ayurvedic texts mention punarnava for conditions described as "glandular swellings" or "shotha," which can refer to various types of inflammation or swelling, including lymphadenopathy.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct evidence supporting the use of punarnava specifically for swollen lymph nodes. Some studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of punarnava, which could plausibly contribute to a reduction in swelling or inflammation affecting glands. However, these studies are mostly preclinical (animal or in vitro) and do not directly address swollen lymph nodes in humans. Thus, the primary justification for its use in this context remains rooted in traditional practice, with some preliminary scientific rationale but insufficient clinical evidence for strong scientific validation.
