Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Chinese and European herbal systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Sanguisorba officinalis (Di Yu) is primarily used for its astringent, anti-hemorrhagic, and anti-inflammatory properties. While not a primary remedy for swollen lymph glands, it has occasionally been included in formulas aimed at reducing inflammation and treating sores, abscesses, or swellings—conditions that can involve lymphatic congestion. However, the use of Sanguisorba specifically for swollen lymph nodes is not a central or well-established indication in traditional texts. There is little to no direct scientific research on Sanguisorba’s effectiveness for lymphatic or glandular swelling. The available studies focus mainly on its hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, with some evidence of general anti-inflammatory action that might be theoretically relevant. However, these studies do not directly address lymphatic swelling or swollen glands. Therefore, the use of Sanguisorba for this purpose is supported more by traditional patterns of use for related inflammatory conditions than by direct scientific or traditional documentation specific to lymph nodes.
