Evidence supporting the use of: Stone Root
For the health condition: Glands (swollen lymph)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Stone Root (Collinsonia canadensis) has been traditionally used in herbal medicine, particularly in North America, to support lymphatic health and address issues such as swollen glands or lymph nodes. Historical records from the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially within the Eclectic medical tradition, describe its use for conditions involving congestion of the lymphatic and vascular systems. Practitioners believed Stone Root helped "move" lymph and reduce glandular swelling, often recommending it for sore throats, laryngitis, and varicose veins as well. However, these uses are primarily based on empirical tradition and anecdotal reports rather than controlled scientific studies.
To date, there is little to no scientific research specifically validating Stone Root’s effects on the lymphatic system or swollen glands. The herb contains volatile oils and saponins, which are believed to confer mild anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits, but direct evidence for lymphatic decongestion is lacking. Modern herbal references sometimes repeat these traditional uses, but they typically do so with the caveat that clinical research is absent. As such, Stone Root’s reputation for supporting swollen glands rests almost entirely on historical practice rather than scientific validation.
