Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for a variety of conditions, including as a remedy for swollen glands and lymphatic congestion. Historical herbal texts and folklore suggest that vervain was believed to "purify the blood" and support lymphatic drainage, and it was often included in remedies for sore throats, tonsillitis, and other ailments involving swollen lymph nodes. However, these uses are primarily based on empirical tradition and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific investigation.

Modern scientific studies on vervain have mostly focused on its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mild sedative properties, but there is little direct evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for swollen lymph glands. No well-designed clinical trials have assessed vervain for lymphatic support or the treatment of lymphadenopathy. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that vervain contains iridoid glycosides and flavonoids, which may have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but translating these findings to lymphatic health in humans remains speculative. Overall, the use of vervain for swollen glands is best described as traditional, with very limited scientific backing.
