Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

7,8-Dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) is a naturally occurring flavone that has gained attention for its ability to act as a small-molecule agonist of the TrkB receptor, which is the primary receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Most research has focused on its neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing properties due to its effects on neuronal survival, plasticity, and synaptic function. There is emerging, but limited, scientific interest in how 7,8-DHF may influence the glandular system, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which integrates neurological and endocrine functions. Animal studies have reported that 7,8-DHF can modulate stress responses and may have indirect effects on adrenal gland function by influencing BDNF-TrkB signaling pathways. However, direct clinical evidence for supporting the overall glandular system in humans is lacking. There are no established traditional uses of 7,8-DHF for glandular health, and its application in this area is primarily based on mechanistic plausibility and preclinical (mostly animal) models. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale for its potential effects on certain glandular functions, especially those tightly linked to neuroendocrine regulation, robust validation in humans is currently insufficient.
