Diiodotyrosine (DIT) is a naturally occurring iodinated derivative of the amino acid tyrosine, and it is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland—a major component of the glandular system. In the thyroid, DIT combines with monoiodotyrosine (MIT) to form triiodothyronine (T3) and with another DIT to form thyroxine (T4), both of which are essential hormones regulating metabolism and growth. Because of this fundamental role, some dietary supplements include DIT or iodinated compounds to "support" thyroid function and, by extension, the glandular system. However, the direct supplementation of DIT itself is not common practice in mainstream medicine, and there is limited evidence supporting its efficacy when taken orally. Most scientific research focuses on the essentiality of iodine and tyrosine as precursors for endogenous thyroid hormone production, rather than on DIT supplementation per se. There is also limited bioavailability data for DIT as a supplement, and current clinical guidelines recommend iodine, not DIT, for supporting thyroid health. While the biochemical importance of DIT within the thyroid gland is well-established, the rationale for using supplemental DIT to support the glandular system lacks robust clinical validation. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for its importance in thyroid hormone synthesis, there is only weak evidence supporting its use as a dietary supplement for glandular system support.
