Ginsenosides are the principal bioactive compounds found in Panax ginseng and related species. They have been traditionally used in East Asian medicine for a variety of health benefits, including supporting the glandular system, particularly the adrenal glands and endocrine function. Scientifically, several studies have investigated the adaptogenic properties of ginsenosides, particularly their effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that ginsenosides can modulate stress responses by influencing cortisol release, ACTH levels, and related endocrine pathways. Furthermore, limited human studies indicate potential benefits in reducing fatigue and improving stress adaptation, possibly via effects on adrenal function.
However, the quality and quantity of evidence are moderate at best. Most clinical trials have small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. While there is a plausible mechanism for glandular support, especially in the context of stress and adrenal function, definitive large-scale clinical evidence is still lacking. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and some preliminary human evidence for the use of ginsenosides to support the glandular system, the overall strength of evidence is moderate, meriting a rating of 3 out of 5.
