They have been widely studied for their biological effects, particularly in relation to cancer prevention and detoxification processes. The glandular system, which includes hormone-producing glands such as the thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands, can be influenced by isothiocyanates primarily due to their impact on hormone metabolism and detoxification enzymes. Scientific studies suggest that isothiocyanates, especially sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol, can modulate enzymatic pathways involved in the metabolism of estrogens and other hormones, potentially reducing the risk of hormone-dependent cancers (e.g., breast and prostate cancer). They are also known to induce phase II detoxification enzymes, which help the body process and eliminate toxins, indirectly supporting glandular health.
