Jaborandi (Pilocarpus species) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in South America and among Indigenous populations. The leaves of the plant are rich in the alkaloid pilocarpine, which has well-documented effects on stimulating exocrine gland activity, especially the salivary and sweat glands. Traditionally, jaborandi was used to promote sweating (diaphoretic effect) and to treat conditions where increased glandular secretion was desired, such as dry mouth or certain fevers.
Modern pharmacology has isolated pilocarpine and utilizes it in medicine (for example, to treat glaucoma or xerostomia), but the whole herb itself is less studied in rigorous clinical trials for general "glandular system" support. Most evidence for its support of the glandular system comes from traditional usage and observational reports rather than controlled scientific studies. Therefore, while there is a clear pharmacological basis for its effects on certain glands, its broader use for "glandular system support" in the context of dietary supplements is grounded more in tradition than in robust clinical research.
