Evidence supporting the use of: Protein
For the body system: Glandular System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Protein plays a critical role in the support and function of the glandular system, a network comprising glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and pancreas that secrete hormones essential for regulation of bodily processes. Scientific evidence demonstrates that adequate dietary protein is necessary for the synthesis of peptide hormones, many of which are produced by glands in this system. For example, insulin (from the pancreas), growth hormone (from the pituitary), and thyroid-stimulating hormone are all peptide-based and require amino acids as building blocks. Studies have shown that insufficient protein intake can impair hormone production, leading to dysfunctions such as reduced metabolic rate, poor stress response, or impaired growth and development. However, while adequate protein is required for normal glandular function, there is limited evidence that high protein intake provides additional benefit for glandular health in individuals who already consume sufficient protein. Most clinical guidelines emphasize adequate, rather than excessive, protein consumption for endocrine health. Thus, the use of protein to support the glandular system is well-founded and scientifically justified, but primarily in the context of meeting nutritional requirements rather than as a targeted remedy for glandular disorders.
