Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Triterpene saponins are a class of chemical compounds widely found in plants such as licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), ginseng (Panax ginseng), and others. Their use to support the glandular system—meaning the body’s network of hormone-producing glands—is primarily rooted in traditional medicine practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, herbs rich in triterpene saponins have been recommended for centuries to promote vitality, support adrenal function, and balance hormones. For example, ginseng has been used to “tonify Qi” and support the endocrine system, while licorice has been used to harmonize other herbs and support adrenal glands. However, direct scientific evidence linking triterpene saponins specifically to support of the overall glandular system is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that certain triterpene saponins can modulate stress response and may have mild effects on hormone metabolism, but these findings are not robust or directly translatable to comprehensive glandular system support in humans. Most clinical studies focus on single organs (e.g., adrenal or thyroid) or on immune modulation rather than broad glandular system effects. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, modern scientific validation is limited, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
