Withanolides are a group of naturally occurring steroidal lactones found primarily in the plant Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha). Traditionally, Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to support overall vitality, including the glandular (endocrine) system. Modern scientific research has begun to explore these claims, particularly focusing on Ashwagandha’s adaptogenic effects and its influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
Several studies suggest that withanolides, as active constituents, may help modulate cortisol levels, a key hormone produced by the adrenal glands, thus supporting the stress response. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that Ashwagandha supplementation can reduce stress and anxiety, presumably through effects on the HPA axis (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012). Limited studies also indicate potential effects on thyroid function and other endocrine parameters, although these results are preliminary.
While the majority of glandular system support claims are based on traditional use, there is emerging scientific evidence—largely from animal studies and small human trials—supporting withanolides' modulatory effects on endocrine glands, particularly concerning stress hormones. However, more robust clinical evidence is needed to fully substantiate these claims.
