Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Angelica archangelica, commonly known as garden angelica, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Asian folk remedies. Its applications have included digestive and respiratory ailments, as well as serving as a general tonic. In some traditional texts and folk practices, Angelica species have been used to address thyroid-related issues, including goiter, largely based on their perceived ability to "stimulate" the body and improve glandular function. However, this use is not prominent or well-documented compared to other herbs traditionally used for goiter, such as those rich in iodine.

There is currently no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Angelica archangelica in treating or supporting goiter (thyroid gland enlargement). Modern pharmacological studies have focused on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and digestive properties, but not on thyroid modulation or iodine content—both of which are directly relevant to goiter. The possible traditional use for goiter appears to be anecdotal and not grounded in robust historical or clinical data. Consequently, the evidence rating for its use in this context is very low (1 out of 5), reflecting weak and largely unsubstantiated traditional claims.
