Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Brown seaweed, particularly varieties such as kelp (Laminaria species), is used to support or treat goiter primarily due to its high iodine content. Goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland, is most commonly caused by iodine deficiency, which impairs the gland’s ability to produce thyroid hormones. Brown seaweeds accumulate iodine from seawater and are among the richest natural sources of this micronutrient. Scientific studies and clinical experience over many decades have established that iodine supplementation reverses or prevents goiter due to deficiency. The use of brown seaweed as a dietary source of iodine, therefore, has a strong scientific basis when iodine deficiency is the underlying cause of goiter.

However, it is important to note that not all goiters are caused by iodine deficiency, and excessive intake of iodine from seaweed can, in some cases, worsen thyroid conditions or lead to other thyroid dysfunctions. The evidence supporting brown seaweed for goiter is robust in the context of iodine-deficiency goiter but does not extend to goiters of other causes. Regulatory bodies such as the WHO and various endocrinology associations recognize iodine supplementation—including from seaweed—as a validated intervention for endemic goiter. Thus, while brown seaweed is not a medicine per se, its use for goiter prevention or support is scientifically justified by its iodine content.
