Evidence supporting the use of: Rockweed (unspecified)
For the health condition: Goiter
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rockweed, a common name for several species of brown seaweed (notably Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus), has a long history of traditional use for goiter, particularly in European herbal medicine. Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, often caused by iodine deficiency. Rockweed is naturally rich in iodine, an essential trace element required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Historically, before iodized salt became widespread, seaweeds like rockweed were used in folk remedies to address thyroid-related swellings, with the rationale that their iodine content would correct the underlying deficiency.
However, scientific validation for the efficacy and safety of rockweed specifically for treating goiter is limited. While it is true that dietary iodine supplementation can prevent or reduce goiter caused by iodine deficiency, direct clinical studies evaluating rockweed for this use are lacking. Furthermore, differences in iodine content among seaweed species, as well as the risk of excessive iodine intake, are potential concerns. The evidence rating of 2 reflects the well-understood role of iodine in thyroid health and some observational support, but a lack of high-quality clinical trials on rockweed itself limits stronger recommendations.
