Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Amor seco is a common name that can refer to various plant species, most notably Desmodium adscendens and sometimes Bidens pilosa. In traditional medicine, especially within parts of Central and South America, certain species called "amor seco" have been used as herbal remedies for a variety of ailments, including sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea. Ethnobotanical records from regions such as Mexico, Brazil, and parts of the Caribbean indicate that decoctions or infusions made from the leaves or aerial parts of these plants have been traditionally administered to treat gonorrhea and other urinary or reproductive tract infections.

However, scientific studies specifically validating the efficacy of "amor seco" (regardless of species) for the treatment of gonorrhea are lacking. The available literature mainly documents the plant's traditional uses based on local or indigenous knowledge, without clinical trials or robust pharmacological investigations to substantiate these claims. While some in vitro studies have demonstrated general antimicrobial activity for related species, none have specifically addressed Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea. Thus, the justification for its use is mainly traditional, with a low level of supporting evidence (1 out of 5), based on reported ethnomedicinal practices rather than scientific validation.
