Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Blepharis species, particularly Blepharis edulis and Blepharis maderaspatensis, have a longstanding place in various traditional medicinal systems, including Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. These plants are historically used to treat a range of ailments, among which gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae) is included. Ethnobotanical surveys from regions in Africa, India, and the Middle East document the use of Blepharis roots, leaves, or seeds as decoctions or powders for managing urinary tract infections and symptoms consistent with gonorrhea (such as urethral discharge). However, the traditional use is generally based on empirical observations and oral traditions rather than systematic clinical evaluation.

Scientific studies on Blepharis focus mostly on its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. While some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Blepharis have general antibacterial activity, there is no robust, peer-reviewed evidence specifically validating efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae or clinical trials confirming its effectiveness in treating gonorrhea in humans. Therefore, its use for gonorrhea is currently supported primarily by traditional knowledge, with scientific evidence being limited and indirect at best.
