For the health condition: Gonorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese Tinospora (Tinospora sagittata), known in traditional Chinese medicine as "Qing Feng Teng" (青风藤), has been used historically for the treatment of various infections, including gonorrhea. The traditional use is documented in several Chinese herbal compendiums, such as the "Chinese Materia Medica," where it is described as having "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties. Specifically, it has been employed in folk medicine for treating conditions characterized by "damp-heat," such as urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. However, the clinical application for gonorrhea is based almost entirely on empirical tradition rather than on modern scientific evaluation.
The available scientific evidence supporting the use of Chinese Tinospora for gonorrhea is minimal. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity of Tinospora extracts against a range of pathogens, but there is a lack of direct research on Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological investigations have specifically assessed its efficacy or safety for treating gonorrhea in humans. Therefore, while its use is established in traditional Chinese medicine, scientific validation for this specific indication is lacking.
