Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flueggea suffruticosa, also known as Phyllanthus niruri or "Securinega suffruticosa" in some older texts, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia, particularly in China and India. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it has been employed for the treatment of various infections, including those with symptoms similar to gonorrhea (e.g., urethritis, urinary tract infections, and other genitourinary complaints). Its use is documented in ethnobotanical surveys and pharmacopeias that record its administration in decoctions or extracts for "clearing heat" and "detoxification," terms that often correspond to the treatment of infectious diseases. However, scientific validation for its efficacy specifically against Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea) is very limited. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts of Flueggea suffruticosa possess antibacterial properties, but there is little to no direct research demonstrating activity against gonorrhea specifically. Furthermore, no clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies support its use for this condition in modern medicine. Thus, while its application is well-established in traditional contexts, the evidence base remains weak by scientific standards, and it should not be considered a proven or reliable treatment for gonorrhea.
