Evidence supporting the use of: Holarrhena (unspecified)
For the health condition: Gonorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Holarrhena species, particularly Holarrhena antidysenterica, have a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems across South Asia and Africa. In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, the bark and seeds of Holarrhena are employed for treating various infectious diseases, including gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional pharmacopeias document its application as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, often in the form of decoctions or powders. However, while in vitro studies have demonstrated some antibacterial activity of Holarrhena extracts against a range of bacteria, there is a lack of direct scientific research specifically validating its efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea. No controlled clinical trials have been published to date regarding its use for gonorrhea in humans. The rating of 2 reflects the robust traditional use and preliminary laboratory evidence for antibacterial action, but the absence of direct scientific validation for this specific indication. Further research is necessary to confirm its effectiveness and safety for treating gonorrhea.
