Evidence supporting the use of: Pluchea
For the health condition: Gonorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pluchea, particularly species like Pluchea indica and Pluchea lanceolata, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine across parts of Asia and Africa. One of the traditional applications includes its use in the management of sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys have documented the use of Pluchea preparations—such as decoctions of leaves or roots—for genitourinary ailments, including urethral discharge and infections that could correspond to gonorrhea. However, these uses are based on local practices and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation.
There is a paucity of modern scientific research directly evaluating the efficacy of Pluchea species against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea. While some preliminary studies have shown that extracts of Pluchea spp. possess general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, no clinical trials or laboratory studies have specifically demonstrated effectiveness against gonorrhea. Thus, the use of Pluchea for gonorrhea is justified by tradition, but scientific evidence remains limited to non-specific antimicrobial activity and traditional use reports, leading to a low evidence rating.
