Evidence supporting the use of: Red Sage
For the health condition: Gonorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), known as Danshen in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used historically for a variety of ailments, primarily for cardiovascular and circulatory conditions. Its inclusion in the treatment of gonorrhea stems from its traditional role as an "herb that cools the blood and resolves toxins," a concept rooted in TCM rather than modern biomedical science. In some traditional herbal formulations, Red Sage may be combined with other herbs to address symptoms associated with "heat" or "toxicity," which in TCM theory can overlap with infectious diseases, including those involving urogenital symptoms. However, while Red Sage contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in vitro, there is a lack of direct scientific evidence supporting its use specifically for gonorrhea, a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. No clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have established its efficacy or safety for this indication. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition in some cultures, the supporting evidence is weak (rated 1), and it should not be relied upon as a primary or sole therapy for gonorrhea, especially given the availability of effective antibiotics.
