Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (also known as Vernonia anthelmintica) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, where it has been used for a variety of ailments. Its seeds and extracts have been cited in ethnobotanical literature as being used for anti-inflammatory purposes and for disorders such as skin diseases, fever, and sometimes joint pain. However, the direct use of Baccharoides anthelmintica for the treatment or support of gout is primarily based on traditional knowledge, not robust scientific validation.

There are a few preclinical studies indicating the plant's extracts have anti-inflammatory properties that could theoretically be of benefit in conditions like gout, which is characterized by inflammation due to uric acid crystal deposition in joints. Nevertheless, there is a lack of clinical trials or well-designed studies specifically assessing its efficacy or safety for gout in humans. The main support for its use comes from traditional practice rather than modern scientific evidence. As such, while there is some biological plausibility and a long history of ethnomedicinal use, the evidence for its effectiveness in gout is very weak and should be considered preliminary at best.
