Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenia, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the management of gout and related urinary disorders. The powdered rhizome, known as "Pashanbheda," is traditionally used for its purported anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) properties. In the context of gout, its use is based on the belief that it helps reduce uric acid levels and alleviate joint inflammation. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that Bergenia extracts may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which could theoretically be beneficial in the context of gout. However, direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There are no large-scale randomized controlled trials or robust clinical studies confirming its efficacy specifically for gout. Most supporting data derives from traditional use and limited preclinical research. Therefore, while Bergenia is traditionally used for gout, scientific validation is limited, and the evidence supporting its use remains largely anecdotal and preliminary.
